Open Loop System
Solar collectors are installed on a south-facing rooftop or on the ground in order to harness the maximum amount of solar energy. The solar collector array is connected to the water heater with copper pipes.
The cool water in the water heater storage tank is pumped to the pipes in the solar array via a 60 watt pump. The sun heats the solar collector which absorbs solar sunlight and transfers the heat to the water flowing through the copper pipe inside the collector. The heated water then returns to the water heater for storage or use.
A controller monitors the temperature sensors at the bottom of the water heater tank and the top of the solar array. When the water temperature at the top of the solar array is warmer than the water temperature in the tank, the controller activates the pump to circulate the water. This process continues throughout the day while solar energy is abundant. Since the water temperature in the tank is maintained by solar energy, the usage of the electric heating element or natural gas burner is reduced by 80% for the typical Arizona homeowner.
Freeze protection is built into the design of the system by circulating a small amount of water through the collector when the temperature sensor in the array approaches 40 degrees Fahrenheit. A freeze protection valve at the top of the array acts as a second layer of freeze protection in the event of a power failure.
